Aker Kvaerner is a Norwegian owned international engineering and construction contractor serving the chemicals, polymers, oil & gas, pharmaceutical, pulping, power and shipbuilding industries with EPC capabilities.

 

I am a member of the Senior E&C Operations management team and responsible for developing and managing a European-wide Quality organisation across multiple international offices and businesses, including High Value Engineering Centres in Romania and India. Responsibilities include supporting businesses with ISO accreditations and audits, driving the European Knowledge Management systems and implementing Quality initiatives based around Lean thinking and Six Sigma. During this time I have successfully managed a European wide change management programme, harmonising organisation structures and operating procedures across seven offices in five countries below budget and to schedule. Further, through overseas background experience, expertise and interest, I have developed a reputation as Aker Kvaerners’ in-house expert on cultural awareness and am a regular presenter/facilitator at major project kick-offs and Aker Kvaerners’ Project Academy.

I was responsible for Project Operations and Engineering departments at Aker Kvaerner’s UK head office in Whiteley. Member of Senior Management Team responsible for managing the day to day operation of the business, managing change and developing long term strategy, particularly relating to business transformation as offshore outsourcing increases. Responsible also for Project Managers across Europe and maintaining/developing client relationships, providing guidance on the long term partnerships, ensuring both Project Management and Engineering resource requirements are resolved.

 

In parallel, I have been involved in corporate initiatives, looking for and assessing additional High Value Engineering Centers (in Asia and Eastern Europe) and at how we work better with our internal design office in Mumbai India, and with the Chinese Design Institutes in China, putting programmes in place to raise Cultural and Attitude Awareness, Innovation, Commercial Awareness and a Lean Sigma Quality DMAIC/ DFSS Quality Initiative across Europe, harmonising systems and procedures across a range of culturally diverse offices.

Senior Project Manager for Kvaerner Process and Partnering Manager with GlaxoSmithKline and based on site in Ulverston, one of their largest manufacturing facilities in Europe, responsible for multiple projects ranging from £5k to £15m in size totalling £70,000,000. Responsible for overall project management including safety, estimating , resource planning, engineering design,  budgets, schedules, subcontractors, client liaison and management of multidisciplined team of 90 engineers and designers. Trained as Lean Sigma advocate and responsible for implementing lean thinking into the project operations process. As Partnering Manager was responsible for developing the annual Business Plan system between AK and GSK and developing, implementing and running the associated Customer Feedback systems and benchmarks with total Profit &Loss responsibility.

 

 

Snr Process Eng, Process Engineering Supt., Technical Manager

CRISTAL , Yanbu, Saudi Arabia                                                                  April 1990 to March 1997

 

CRISTAL (The National Titanium Dioxide Company) was the largest private investment in Saudi Arabia at the time, manufacturing TiO2 for both the Middle East and export markets and was a very high profile and remains a very successful joint venture with the American owned Kerr McGee Corporation..

 

Involved in Precommissioning & Commissioning of $200,000,000, 45,000 tonne/yr plant and directly responsible for commissioning all loop testing, Distributed Control System (DCS) and Programmable Logic Control (PLC) systems in addition to the main oxidation unit. As head of Process Engineering was responsible for Design and Project Management of process modifications across site from initial Process Flow Diagrams (PFD’s) to Piping &Instrumentation Diagrams  (PID’s), Hazop and installation on systems ranging from distillation, lime slaking and water treatment. Instrumental in increasing capacity from 45,000 tonnes/yr to 60,000 tonnes/yr. Responsible for multi million dollar projects including the conversion of heaters, dryers & boilers from diesel to ethane,  installation of addition cooling & RO & water treatment plants and for troubleshooting Liquified Petroleum Gas storage, vaporisation &  letdown systems, for product quality  and plant throughput across site. Additional responsibilities included the configuration and maintenance of plantwide DCS and PLCs. Later for the specification, upgrading and configuration of Fischer Porter (Elsag Bailey/Hartmann  Braun) DCS.

 

Responsible for the management of technology development and implementation on site and harmonization of technologies with sister sites in the Mississippi and  Oklahoma in the USA and Perth in Australia. Member of ISO 9002 implementation/ guidance management team which was successfully awarded first time.

Warner Lambert was a pharmaceutical manufacturer producing both actives and over the counter brands such as Benilin and Listerine at this facility. It is now part of Pfizer.

 

Management of team improving Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), plant reliability and control on site including assessment and control of external vendors. Design, specification, Hazop study & commissioning of plant in zone 1 area including centrifuges, filters, distillation facilities etc. Specification, installation and configuration of Foxboro DCS.  Liason with FDA where appropriate.

 

Process Engineer/Project Engineer

Borg Warner Ltd (now GE Plastics), Grangemouth, Scotland                       April 1985 to April 1987

 

GE Plastics is a manufacturer of high quality engineering resins and compounded coloured pelletised plastics which at this facility are  based on Acrylonitrile-Butadiene-Styrene polymers produced through an emulsion polymerization process.

 

Troubleshooting and process design on 90,000 tonne/yr ABS polymer plant and 40,000 tonnes/yr compounding facility.  Design & commissioning of system for distributing & processing styrene and acrylonitrile. Design & commissioning of plant modifications to improve efficiency in the polymerisation process increasing throughput by 12% between shutdowns. Process monitoring for plant efficiency for both quality and throughput.
